Jessica Simpson’s Hair Care Secret

December 16th, 2008 · 20 Comments

Ever wondered how Jessica Simpson keeps her long locks looking so lovely? Now thanks to her stylist Ken Paves the secret is out.

“She only washes her hair about two to three times a month. I told Jess a long time ago that you should only wash your hair a few times a week, and in between, rinse it and condition it. And her hair looks fantastic all the time,” over-shares Paves.

I’ve heard of two or three times a week, but a month? That just sounds gross to me. What do you think?

I only wash my hair once a week. It makes no natural oil. It’s so dry that I think I could go months before it would get oily.

I also think that it is gross! My hair would look like I forgot to wash out a mayonaise treatment after a couple of days…Maybe it is her hair extensions that look so awesome.

Hello girls. Thanks for the comments.

Heather – I look like that if I skip one wash so I totally understand.

D – consider yourself very lucky that you can skip so many washes!

My hair would look and smell vile after 4 days.

I think if you dye your hair you’re able to do that… if you don’t have curly hair and you don’t dye it, that’s not the recipe you should be following.

Hmmm…just seems a little unhygenic. After all, bacteria grow on everyone’s skin, everyday, all over the body- including the scalp (we have my M.D. hubby to thank for that gross-but-true info). 2-3 times a week seems like an okay deal, but for oily scalps, probably a bad plan. How about a compromise with dry shampoo? Or, I have found that washing my hair at night, then pinning it up for a morning shower before styling helps it not dry out (extra moisture from the steam, plus you still get the benefit of that morning shower eye-opener)!

i only wash once a week too, but additionally, i rinse, condition and massage my scalp at least 2 times a week…which keeps my hair from smelling. if i washed my hair more than once a week it would be dry and frizzy.

Thanks for the comments everyone. It seems if you have dry hair you can go longer between washes than those of us with normal/oily hair.

Libby- Bacteria? Thanks for the info, but Gross!! Hehe.

You ladies have a lot to learn …But there are a lot of women out there that do not wash their hair everyday. I happen to be one of them…I am African-American and most folks within my culture do not wash but once a week or every other week.

I personally wash my hair once a week and I always get complements from men and women on how beautiful my hair looks.

As far as bacteria growing on the scalp….that bacteria has never given me a rash or lice….in all my 29 years I have never gotten lice or have known any other African-Americans to get them.

The moral of the story is that some people have to wash everyday and others have the luxury of skipping and doing something else with their extra time.

It’s also worth noting that cutting back on washing your hair takes a little time. If you cut back right away to once or twice a week, your scalp will of course feel icky, because your scalp is accustomed to having to produce more oils to help account for all the sudsy washing you were previously doing! Try washing every other day, and then cut back from there if you can. It’s great for your hair!!

Aisha, thats because our hair doesn’t get oily, our hair is naturally dry, thats why so many Black women put oil, grease or hair lotion in their hair. But a non-black person washing their hair only a couple of times a month is like the equivalent of a black woman washng her hair a couple of times a year, which is pretty gross.

I have thick, long, coarse caucasian hair that I highlight and I only wash once a week or sometimes even less. I am complimented on my hair all the time. I do not use any styling products which may help. It takes so long to style that I go as long as possible and let my scalp dictate the washings. I take a bath or pin it up in the shower. I use Lavanilla natural perfume on my neck and many people say my hair smells delicious. When I was young my mom only washed my hair on Sunday (whether it needed it or not :)

when I was a child and teen I washed my hair once a week, my hair was so thick in fact I used to complain it was too thick.
I can’t remember when or why I started washing it everyday, all I do know is my head starts to itch and I get psoriasis if I don’t wash daily, I’m sure this washing is exasperating the problem, my hair is now so thin you can see my scalp :o (

I just wanted to add that lice actually prefers clean, not dirty hair. That could be one of your secrets to not getting lice.

Also, drying your hair with a hair dryer kills them. I assume that is one reason why kids get them more than adults.

We’re talking about Jessica Simpson here. She’s not black, so I don’t know how being african-american has any relevance. However everyone’s skin and hair texture is different. So she only washes her hair a couple times a month, but she still puts water on it and conditions it, so I don’t see how that is gross. It’s not like she’s just dirty or anything. That’s just the way her hair is and what works best for her. That’s not to say that will work for everyone tho.

No extensions required on my head. I have really thick, long hair that is naturally curly.
If I washed it every day, it would be as coarse as straw! Not to mention that it would take forever to dry and style. Nope. Since I started using a flat iron to straighten my hair, I can go up to a month or more between shampoos and no one would know the difference if I didn’t tell them.

I get compliments about my hair all the time. It NEVER looks or feels greasy or oily. My hair is in the best condition and the only product I use in it is the silicone serum spray when I first straighten it and to freshen it up between shampoos. Brushing keeps it shiny and clean and any stylist will tell you that hair that hasn’t been washed for more than a few days is easier to style.

It might not work for everyone, but no one should be grossed out about not washing their hair every single day. It just isn’t necessary.

It seems like no washing is all the trend now.. but.. most of my life I have only washed by hair ONCE a week. I was told by EVERYONE that was the way to go. I have thick wavy hair that people would compliment because it is – well thick and wavy and long. Although I hated all the frizz and I would get fly aways, people insisted that washing it would strip away all the oil and make it worse. Recently due to working out really hard, I HAD to wash everyday, because it just smelled like sweat! Guess what? My hair looks 100 times better. My advise to a lot of people with frizz and fly aways – who have tried the NOT washing treatment- try WASHING your hair everyday. My hair now has NO frizz, NO flyaways, it is silky and shiny and healthier! Sometimes I get busy and can’t wash and the frizz returns. Will this work for you? Don’t know. … but if you hate the frizz especially in the summer, why not give it a try? I use a relative cheap shampoo and conditioner. It actually SAVES me time to wash everyday. Why? When I was weekly shampooing I had to shampoo a couple of times to get rid of the itchy/ greasy feeling. Then I had to wait longer to condition deeper (I would use expensive stuff). At the end of the week my hair (before the shampoo) felt really dry – especially the ends and the scalp woudl be greasy. (Oh and I did the whole combing thing with a boars hair brush, etc. etc.) Now I just shampoo once lightly and condition once lightly and just go. The oils now get all the way to the ends and feel great. And my scalp doesn’t feel oily or itchy. Plus I get no back acne. Everyone’s hair is different. For me washing every days is defintely the say to go.

Jessica’s hair seems to prove that only washing it less is doing great for her. I wash my hair everyday and I know I shouldn’t due to ingredients in shampoos can be harmful and strip hair of natural oils that moisturize, and protect hair from drying out and damage. Maybe I need to do an experiement of washing my hair once a week or even a month. Decades ago when ppl didn’t have running water they HAD to go once week or month in bathing and hair washing.

I do exactly the same. I usually wash my hair every 4-7 days or sometimes longer and rinse in between and apply a spray leave in conditioner. Then I wrap it at night. Wrapping it helps seal in the moisture and keep hair straight so I don’t have to use straighteners or hair products on a regular basis.
My hair is really glossy and looks healthier.
